Nancy Bergfeld Elected to Library Foundation Board,
Annual Fund Appeal Established

At its quarterly meeting on September 6 Nancy Bergfeld of High Ridge joined the Jefferson County Library Foundation Board and was immediately elected Foundation treasurer. Mrs. Bergfeld is a retired math teacher and currently serves as Vice President of the Northwest R-1 School District Board of Education.

The Foundation acknowledged receipt of a $1,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation on behalf of the House Springs Walmart. The Walmart Foundation has now donated a total of $3,000 to the Library Foundation this year on behalf of the Arnold, Gravois Bluffs, and House Springs stores.  The Foundation Board approved the transfer of $3,000 to the Library District towards the cost of this year's subscription to the JobNow electronic service that assists job seekers in writing resumes, practicing interview skills, conducting job searches and improving basic skills. Over 340 job seekers have accessed this online service since the library began offering it through the library web site last March.

The Foundation Board also agreed to establish an Annual Appeal campaign this fall to encourage Jefferson County residents to show their support for their County library. The money raised will go towards improvements in technology and employee continuing education, so that the library can provide 21st century resources and services that keep Jefferson County competitive and attractive to families.

Library Foundation Sponsors "Dine Out for the Library" Fundraiser June 30 at Jilly's Cafe & Steakhouse

The Jefferson County Library Foundation raised $200 at its first fundraising event, "Dine Out for the Library," on June 30 at Jilly's Cafe & Steakhouse in High Ridge.

Jilly's pledged the Library Foundation 10% of the proceeds of every lunch and dinner purchased on June 30 by everyone who brings in a coupon for the "Dine Out for the Library" event. The Library Foundation was established in October 2010 to raise awareness and funds to support the technology development needs of the Jefferson County Library, celebrating 20 years of service to northern Jefferson County in 2011.

David Mangelsdorf, President of the Library Foundation Board, whose mother advocated for many years to see a county library established in Jefferson County, said: "The library has worked hard to support the needs of the people of Jefferson County. It's been here for us for 20 years, to the benefit of ourselves and our children. Now more than ever, we need our library: job seekers need the library, retired folks need the library, our kids need the library --- and the Library needs 21st century technology to meet the challenges of the years to come."

Mangelsdorf said the Foundation's ultimate goal is to establish an endowment fund to provide the seed money for new technology that will help the library provide the programs and services people want in the most cost-effective way.

Other Foundation Board members include Vernon Sullivan, Eric Knoll, Carroll Anderson and Gary Hobbs.

Arnold & Fenton Walmarts Donate to Library Foundation

The Arnold Walmart has made the first donation to the new Jefferson County Library Foundation. The Foundation received a check for $1,000 from the Walmart Foundation on behalf of the Arnold Walmart, said JCL director Pam Klipsch.

In June the Foundation received a second donation of $1,000 from the Walmart Foundation on behalf of the Fenton Walmart located in Gravois Bluffs.

"This money will help to pay for our Job Now database subscription that provides free online help to adults looking for employment, preparing their resumes and practicing job interview skills," Klipsch said. "In the first two months that we've had the database available, over 160 people have already made use of the service."

The library decided to subscribe to the service because so many people are using the library's resources to look for work. "Unemployment in Jefferson County is still over nine percent," Klipsch pointed out. Any resident or cardholder of the Jefferson County Library District is elgible to use the Job Now database service either at the library or from home via the Internet.

Gary Hobbs, the manager of the Arnold Walmart, said that helping people improve their chances for employment is one of the Walmart Foundation's priorities in determining grant awards.

The Jefferson County Library established the Foundation to focus on fundraising to support development needs as the library moves into the 21st century.

Library Director Pam Klipsch says the library needs to find other souces of revenue to offset the decline in state and federal support. "Although state and federal funding is a small percentage of our overall revenue, it's something we have used to cover the start up costs of technology projects that have improved our services, and to provide support for employees who pursue additional training and education so we can provide better service to the community," she said.

The Foundation received its 501c3 nonprofit designation from the Internal Revenue Service in October 2010, after a group of five citizens agreed to serve as the organizing Board of the Foundation: Carroll Anderson, Eric Knoll, David Mangelsdorf, Sandy May and Vernon Sullivan. The President of the Library Board of Trustees, Retta Susan Tuggle, Library Director Pam Klipsch, and Library Assistant Director Debby Byron, serve as ex officio (non-voting) members of the Foundation Board. The Foundation Board meets quarterly on the first Tuesday of March, June, September and December.

2011 Foundation Board:

  • President: David Mangelsdorf
  • Vice President: Vernon Sullivan
  • Secretary: Eric Knoll
  • Treasurer: Carroll Anderson
  • one vacancy

The Foundation applies for grants from community organizations and corporate donors, and solicits tax-deductible gifts and donations from individuals and groups, which are designed to benefit the library district as a whole, and to support technology and professional developments needs. The long range goal is to establish an endowment fund for the library.

The Foundation gives special recognition to major donors at the following levels:

  • Library Champion: $10,000 or more in one year
  • Library Sponsors: $5,000 or more in one year
  • Library Fans: $1,000 or more in one year
  • Library Donors: $500 or more in one year
